Hearing Aid Jewellery
Colette Hazelwood with Mickey Fellows and Ali Briggs

Colette’s jewellery is not for the faint-hearted.
She mixes both precious and non-precious material
in a perfect compliment to the body that her work adorns.

Nylon, plastic, steel and aluminium
are combined with silver and gold
to create Colette’s unique and very contemporary style.

Colette worked with Ali to produce a hearing aid/head piece
that would not disguise the fact that Ali is deaf,
but would celebrate the hearing aid, and decorate Ali’s head.
The piece takes into account Ali’s hair and eye colour,
as well as her personality and way of expressing herself.

The end result is a sophisticated and elegant
silver and nylon ear piece.

Colette’s second exhibit was designed with Mickey,
who wears a cochlea implant.
Mickey does not usually wear jewellery.
Mickey and Colette decided to confront people’s reactions
to Mickey’s cochlea implant.
They decided on an arm piece to represent the machine age.
One that played with people’s perceptions of Mickey
as half man and half machine.

Ali Briggs is an actress and project worker living in Manchester
She has worked for the Graeae Theatre Company in London.
Mickey Fellows is also an actor based in Manchester.
Colette Hazelwood is a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University.
